Friuli

Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region in the north-east of Italy, on the border with Slovenia, Austria and the Adriatic Sea.

The region is a karst plateau formed from barren rocks, in which soil erosion has created a series of caves and hollows. It is known for its many vineyards, where mainly white wines are produced, as well as for the peaks of the Dolomites.

The capital Trieste belonged to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in the 19th century and is known for its beautiful old town, the Piazza dell' Unitá on the waterfront and the Castello di Miramare.
